Embedding supported videos without uploading large video files

wordpress

Embedding a video from a supported service can keep the video file off your hosting account while displaying a player inside the page. The external service still controls availability, playback behaviour and any tracking associated with its player.

01 Prepare the video and alternative content

Use a video you own or are permitted to embed. Confirm that its visibility settings allow the intended audience to view it and that embedding is enabled. Add captions and a useful text summary or transcript where appropriate so essential information is not available only through audio or video.

02 Add the embed

  1. Copy the video's normal share URL from the supported service, avoiding private administrative links.
  2. Insert the appropriate Embed block or paste the URL into an empty paragraph where WordPress recognises it.
  3. Wait for the preview, then check the player and any supported aspect-ratio or alignment controls.
  4. Add context explaining what the video covers and how long it takes to watch, where useful.
  5. Save and preview the page at a narrow width before publishing.

03 Check public playback

Test while signed out of both WordPress and the video service. A video visible to its owner may be unavailable to ordinary visitors. Confirm the player does not overflow its container and that keyboard controls and captions are usable.

Review how the external embed fits your website's privacy choices. If your consent setup delays third-party media, test both the blocked placeholder and the allowed playback state. A blank player may reflect that control rather than a hosting fault.

Why will the video not embed or play?

Check the URL, the service's supported embed format and the video's sharing restrictions. If WordPress cannot retrieve the preview, record the error and test another known public video from the same service to distinguish a content-specific issue.

Do not paste arbitrary scripts from an unknown website to force a player to appear. If the service requires custom code, use its official guidance and an authorised implementation. Keep a direct viewing link or written alternative when the video contains information visitors must be able to access even if the external player is unavailable.
