Testing a CodeGuard backup before restoring production

backups

Test recovery before an incident to find missing files, wrong database selection or insufficient restore permissions. A backup job completing successfully is only one part of a recovery plan.

01 Run a controlled test

  1. Choose a representative completed backup and document its file and database scope.
  2. Use an isolated test location where available, with separate database credentials and no connection to live customer workflows.
  3. Download and restore the selected files and database using the intended recovery method.
  4. Disable test-site outgoing mail, payments, scheduled jobs and external integrations before opening it for validation.
  5. Check a visitor page, administrative login, uploaded media and a harmless application write.

02 Interpret automated tests

CodeGuard's automated test-restore workflow can place a test file in the website root. That checks particular access and visibility conditions; it should not be treated as a complete rehearsal of an ecommerce database recovery.

Common questions

Why did the automated test fail?

Check the selected root, write permission, backup recency and whether the test file can be reached at the expected URL. Investigate the specific error.

Should I test on the live homepage?

Use an isolated environment or a carefully scoped harmless test. Avoid overwriting production data merely to prove that a restore button exists.

What should the test record contain?

Record the backup point, components restored, elapsed recovery work, functions tested and remaining gaps. Include who accepted the result.

Remove the test environment or secure it after the exercise, including backup downloads and temporary credentials. Repeat the relevant part after a major application, database or hosting change. A recovery method tested on last year's server may need different access or configuration on the current service.
