Retiring a pointer domain without deleting the target website

control-panels, domains-dns

Retiring a pointer removes an alternate domain relationship without intentionally deleting the target website. Review incoming links and mail aliases before removal so the old name has a deliberate destination or retirement plan.

Prepare for the change

Record the pointer’s source, target, type and mail-alias choice. Check analytics, external links, certificates and mail usage, and preserve DNS records before editing.

01 Retire a pointer domain without deleting the target website

  1. Open Hosting Features > Domains > Pointer and locate the exact alternate domain.
  2. If visitors should continue reaching the target, configure and verify a replacement redirect that will still serve the old hostname after this pointer is removed. Keep valid HTTPS coverage for that source hostname and complete any required DNS transition first. Retain the current pointer if it is still the only configuration serving the redirect.
  3. Review mail aliases and arrange a replacement destination for addresses still in use. Notify the responsible mailbox owners through the normal business process.
  4. Use the trash/delete action for the pointer row and read the confirmation carefully. Avoid deleting the primary or secondary target domain.
  5. Test the target website and its mail, then verify the retired name follows the planned DNS and redirect behaviour.

Confirm the expected result

The target site should remain intact, and the old name should have an intentional outcome rather than an accidental server-default page or lost mailbox route.

If the change does not work

If the wrong pointer was removed, recreate its recorded type and target through the supported interface. DNS caches and browser-cached permanent redirects can delay what a test appears to show. Do not delete target-site files to remove an alternate hostname.

Should I cancel the old domain immediately?

Domain renewal is separate from pointer removal. Retaining a known business domain can preserve links and prevent confusion; make that ownership decision deliberately rather than treating it as automatic cleanup.
