Installing Textpattern and checking the first setup

development

Textpattern is a publishing CMS that separates content, presentation templates and reusable forms. This guide helps you check hosting compatibility, choose an appropriate installation method and verify the first usable site. The application, its extensions and any commercial license remain separate from the hosting account.

01 Check Textpattern and hosting requirements

Check the supported Textpattern release, required PHP/database versions and plugin compatibility. Plan the site's sections and content structure before choosing a template.

Use the project's current supported release information and the requirements shown for the package you select. If Softaculous offers an older or unsuitable build, follow the current vendor installation process or ask us to confirm a suitable environment. Do not enable an unsupported PHP runtime simply to reproduce an old tutorial.

02 Install Textpattern in the correct location

  1. Back up any existing site at the destination. Choose an empty directory or a separate staging hostname for a new installation; never approve overwriting a working site without a migration plan.
  2. Open Softaculous where your hosting service includes it. In cPanel, search for Softaculous Apps Installer. In SiteWorx, use Hosting Features > Softaculous where that integration is enabled.
  3. Find Textpattern and review the package and requirements before selecting Install. Select the correct HTTPS domain. Leave In Directory empty only when the empty domain root is the intended destination.
  4. Complete the application-specific fields and a strong administrator credential stored in a password manager. Supply a reachable administrative email where requested. Review database, backup and update choices instead of accepting unsuitable defaults.
  5. Start installation once and wait for the completion result. Record the public and administration URLs. Where this application needs the publisher's own deployment process, complete that process instead of forcing an outdated installer package.

03 Configure Textpattern for first use

Configure sections, categories and the initial publishing preferences. Create a sample article and attach it to the intended section. Review templates and forms carefully because a presentation change can affect many pages.

04 Worked example: trace an article through its Textpattern section

Create a temporary article for a section such as Guides and assign the intended category. Check its publication state, section assignment and the presentation template used for that section.

  1. View the article's direct URL as a guest and confirm the title and body appear.
  2. Open the Guides listing and verify the article is included by the intended listing rules.
  3. Check its image and navigation, then test the same workflow with a limited author account.
  4. If the direct article works but the list omits it, inspect the section, status and template selection before reimporting the database.

Save a copy of the relevant page template and reusable forms before editing shared presentation logic. A correction to one template can affect multiple sections, so verify a representative page from each affected area after the change.

Confirm the expected result

Test the article URL, section listing, image output and visitor navigation. Sign in as a limited author to confirm the publishing workflow works without administrator privileges.

05 Maintain and troubleshoot Textpattern

If content is present in the database but not shown, inspect the section and template logic before assuming data is missing. Back up presentation code as well as article data.

Keep files and data together in your recovery plan, test application updates in a copy when practical, and review logs after deployment. If installation fails, record the exact error, selected application/PHP versions and destination path before retrying.

A common question

Does a successful installation mean the whole application is ready for customers?

No. Verify the public content, permissions, forms or notifications and the features you actually use. An installer success message confirms provisioning, not your complete business workflow.
