Removing a separate website domain from cPanel

cpanel-whm, domains-dns

Remove an additional hosted domain when its website is being retired or moved away. Removing the domain’s hosting configuration is separate from cancelling registration and from deleting all files that once belonged to it.

01 Prepare for the change

Back up the website, database and any mail that must be retained. Record the domain’s document root and dependencies. If the site is moving, verify the new destination before removing the old hosting configuration.

02 Remove a separate website domain from cPanel

  1. Open Domains and select Manage beside the exact additional domain. Confirm it is not the account’s main domain.
  2. Read the removal information and confirm the intended domain. Do not assume this step safely deletes every related file or database.
  3. Update public DNS and any external mail configuration according to the migration or retirement plan. A zone hosted elsewhere is not automatically updated by a cPanel removal.
  4. Review the remaining document-root files, databases, cron jobs and FTP users individually. Delete them only after confirming they are no longer shared or required.
  5. Keep a dated independent backup for the agreed retention period.

03 Confirm the expected result

Check that unrelated domains still work and that the retired domain reaches its replacement, redirect or intended inactive state. Verify mail separately if addresses used that domain.

04 Example: retire one website while keeping the account’s other sites

Map the domain to its document root, database, email addresses and any aliases before removing it. A domain can share files or application resources with another website, so its visible name is not a complete deletion plan.

Take a suitable backup and agree what visitors should see afterwards. If the site is moving, verify its destination and DNS cutover before removing the old hosting entry. Keep mail routing separate from website routing so business messages are not unintentionally interrupted.

Does removing the domain cancel its registration?

No. Hosting configuration and domain registration are separate services. Review renewal and cancellation through the relevant service controls rather than assuming one panel action completes both tasks.

Read every file-removal option carefully. Do not delete a directory used by another domain or remove a database whose ownership you have not established. After the change, test the remaining sites and the retired hostname. Contact us with the intended outcome and domain relationships before proceeding if you are unsure. We would rather help you confirm the scope than recover from an avoidable deletion.

What if domain removal is blocked or affects the wrong website?

If removal is unavailable, the hostname may be the main domain or subject to an account restriction. Ask support for the correct change process. If the wrong site was affected, stop cleanup and restore its hosting association and configuration before deleting any remaining data.
