SMF is a community forum with boards, member groups and moderation controls. This guide helps you check hosting compatibility, choose an appropriate installation method and verify the first usable site. The application, its extensions and any commercial license remain separate from the hosting account.

01 Check SMF and hosting requirements
Plan which boards are public, member-only or restricted to staff. Decide who approves registrations and moderates new posts before opening the forum to the public.
Use the project's current supported release information and the requirements shown for the package you select. If Softaculous offers an older or unsuitable build, follow the current vendor installation process or ask us to confirm a suitable environment. Do not enable an unsupported PHP runtime simply to reproduce an old tutorial.
02 Install SMF in the correct location
- Back up any existing site at the destination. Choose an empty directory or a separate staging hostname for a new installation; never approve overwriting a working site without a migration plan.
- Open Softaculous where your hosting service includes it. In cPanel, search for Softaculous Apps Installer. In SiteWorx, use Hosting Features > Softaculous where that integration is enabled.
- Find SMF and review the package and requirements before selecting Install. Select the correct HTTPS domain. Leave In Directory empty only when the empty domain root is the intended destination.
- Complete the application-specific fields and a strong administrator credential stored in a password manager. Supply a reachable administrative email where requested. Review database, backup and update choices instead of accepting unsuitable defaults.
- Start installation once and wait for the completion result. Record the public and administration URLs. Where this application needs the publisher's own deployment process, complete that process instead of forcing an outdated installer package.
03 Configure SMF for first use
Create a test board and a non-administrator test member. Configure the forum email address and confirm outbound notifications through a permitted mail method. Review attachment types and limits rather than allowing unrestricted uploads.
04 Worked example: launch a small support community
For a new support forum, create a public board called Product questions and a restricted board called Staff notes. Use a separate ordinary member for testing, not the administrator account that configured the boards.
- Open a private browser window as a guest. Confirm the public board is visible and Staff notes is not.
- Sign in as the test member and create a harmless question in the public board. Check the registration or moderation rule you selected is applied.
- Report the test post using the normal member workflow. Confirm the intended moderator can review the report and act on that post.
- Check the resulting notification reaches the expected mailbox, then remove the test content.
Successful result: visitors see only public material, members can use their permitted boards, and moderation reaches the responsible person. Record a failed permission or notification test before inviting real members.
Confirm the expected result
Check that a guest cannot see a private board, that the test member can post in the intended public board, and that a moderator can handle a reported post.
05 Maintain and troubleshoot SMF
A successful installer does not validate every old SMF modification. Test themes and modifications against the selected release before importing a live community.
Keep files and data together in your recovery plan, test application updates in a copy when practical, and review logs after deployment. If installation fails, record the exact error, selected application/PHP versions and destination path before retrying.
A common question
Does a successful installation mean the whole application is ready for customers?
No. Verify the public content, permissions, forms or notifications and the features you actually use. An installer success message confirms provisioning, not your complete business workflow.
